A Bridge to Africa

On the occasion of the G7 Agriculture and Fisheries summit, held in Ortigia, Syracuse, from September 21 to 29, 2024, TRAMA, in collaboration with TERNA, presents A Bridge to Africa, a site-specific installation designed to evoke the dialogue of unity and cooperation between Africa and the G7 countries.

The Ponte Umbertino in Ortigia, the installation’s focal point, was illuminated by seven vertical beams of light, each representing one of the G7 nations. Through these lights, the bridge was transformed into a symbol of connection with the African continent, embodying the shared aspiration of the member countries to build bridges of collaboration. The installation symbolically spanned the Mediterranean Sea, highlighting the importance of this sea as a pathway for communication and cooperation.

In the former Piazza d’Armi, overlooking the Ionian Sea and facing Africa, seven beams of light – echoing those crossing the sky from the Umbertino Bridge – casting their glow toward the African continent.
By blending art and diplomacy and using light as a universal language, A Bridge to Africa visually conveyed the goals of the Mattei Plan and Terna’s ELMED project, conveying a message of inclusion and international partnership. It offers a profound reflection on the potential of international cooperation for global progress.
